Labyrinth
Endless, labyrinthine passageways, form
which the dreamer can find no way out, are a frequent dream image.
In Greek mythology the Cretan labyrinth was the dwelling-place of
the Minotaur, the son of the bull-god. The Greek hero Theseus
defeated the Minotaur after being given a ball of wool by Ariadne,
the Minotaur's sister. He fastened the end of the ball of
wool ( referred to as Ariadne's clew) at the entrance and was thus
able to find his way out of the labyrinth again after killing the
Minotaur.
Theseus owes his life to Ariandne's ball of wool, and so she here
symbolizes the intellectual aspects of womanhood. The bull-like
monster in the labyrinth, the Minotaur, appears as a symbol of the
sex drive, something which for the consciousness must remain impenetrable.
Man's intellectual and spiritual relationship to woman, symbolized
here by Ariadne's clew, enables the hero to survive the dangerous
adventure and to conquer the bull within himself. in the myth,
though a resolution, of this conflict is already anticipated, A
ladyrinth in a dream usually signifies solely the dangerous elements
of the story. |
Lameness, paralysis
The concept of lameness or paralysis is
unequivocal, even as a dream image. It should be understood
as a sign on being intellectually or psychically impeded.
The further developments in the dream are decisive for the interpretation. |
Leather
Leather clothing,
leather whips etc., in a dream indicate strong aggressive tendencies.
Leather is a fetish with sadomasochists; i.e., am object on which
sexuality becomes neurotically fixed. When interpreting leather
or leather objects in a dream, attention should be paid to sadistic
and aggressive tendencies. |
Lion
The lion often indicates hidden emotional disturbances.
It can also appear as the symbolic image of strong mental forces,
as the lion in our culture is a symbol of sovereignty. |
Lock and Key
In most popular legends, locks and keys
have a sexual significance. This arises form the analogy of
the union of man and woman. In fairytales, however, the key
is also a symbol of revelation. In general, the dream image
of a lock indicates an attitude of reserve. If the context
indicates that the lock can be indicated as a symbol of the female
genitals, this can be a reference to a woman needing protection
or to female frigidity. The image of the key which fits the lock
is an indication of the possibilities of alteration and change.
As a counterpart to the lock, the key has a masculine significance.
It symbolizes male strength and sovereign power. |
Locomotive, engine
The locomotive is a symbol of collective
energy. It symbolizes forces in society which support the
dreamer during his passage through life.
