Baker
Professions generally represent a comparable
psychic process. The baker provides the daily bread. He transforms
unpalatable grain into a nutritious food. The baker is the
symbol for that inner aspect of the dreamer which is responsible
for spiritual nourishment. |
Ball
Like the sphere, the ball is a symbol of
totality; when we think of expressions like 'the terrestrial globe'
or 'the orb of the sun', it becomes clear that the ball can be an
image of concentrated psychic energy. It indicates processes of
alteration and change. |
Baptism (bath)
Baptism is the symbol of spiritual cleansing.
The dream image of baptism indicates that it has become necessary
to liberate oneself from old, obstructive and incorrect attitudes.
After liberation from such obsolete attitudes, the consciousness
can take a new direction. |
Bath
This has the same significance in dreams
as in almost all myths and fairytales, that of a symbol of change
and cleansing. The image of a bath or bathroom occurs particularly
before decisive turning-points in the dreamer's life. The
water in the dream bath symbolizes spiritual energy. Should
the bath be a pool in the open air, for example, it is a thoroughly
positive image. A modern swimming-pool, on the other hand,
indicates the obstacle modern civilization poses to psychic cleansing
and change. |
Bear
The bear appears mostly as a helpful,
motherly, earthy animal. In a woman's dream, the bear can appear
as an indication of the neglected motherly side of her character.
On the other hand, the bear embodies a powerful natural force. |
Bed
Generally speaking, the dream images of
a bed assumes an erotic significance. A bed which fills the
whole room means that the dreamer awards sexuality too much significance
in his life. the reverse is true when the bed is too small
or too narrow. |
Belt
The man's belt has long been a symbol of
male strength. Vital energy was thought to stem form the loins and
the kidneys; in the past, vitality and sexual potency were always
synonymous. For women, the belt is a symbol of virtue and
purity. |
Bird
Birds live in the air, the world of the pure intellect.
Birds in a dream symbolize intellectual matters. |
Birth
The process of birth in a dream is a sign
for the beginning of something new. Its symbolic meaning is,
however, extremely rarely that of a real birth, even in the dreams
of young women. If men dream of childbirth, it is an allusion to
the origination of new ideas, career prospects, etc. |
Blood
Blood is a symbol of vitality. There
still exists a general popular belief in blood's magical powers.
Blood also symbolizes love and passion. Loss of blood can
indicate loss of love, but can also indicate a necessary spiritual
sacrifice. A blood transfusion can be seen as spiritual enrichment. |
Bluebeard
In the fairytale, the knight Bluebeard
is a man who gives his wife the keys to all the rooms of his castle.
He warns her, however, not to open one particular door. When
she defies the warning and opens the door in Bluebeard's absence,
she finds the corpses of his previous wives. Bluebeard catches
her in the act, but she escapes death. Dreams like this, in
numerous modern variations, are not uncommon.
According to Jung, this dream images is one of the many manifestations
of the archetype for which he coined the expression Animus.
In simple terms, this means the male element in the female personality.
In this dream, with its figure of a woman-killing villain, an unconscious
aspect of the female dreamer's personality is shown - i.e. suppresses
masculine traits. |
Bombs & Explosions
Things of this nature are to be regarded
as danger signals. they can conjure up past war-time experiences.
They can indicate events which have caused shock. |
Bread
Bread symbolizes 'the staff of life', and
also spiritual invigoration. Bread always assumes a positive significance
in dreams. |
Bridge
Whenever a bridge appears in a dream, the
psyche is signaling that a difficulty can be reconciled or bridged
over. however, not every bridge is traversable. The method
of construction - if for example the railing is missing or the bridge
is incomplete - indicates possible dangers to the dreamer. |
Bull
the bull is the symbol of male strength
and potency. Sexuality requires domination by the male intellect.
During cult festivals in Crete, it was usual that youths would grab
a bull by the horns, swing onto its back and ride it. the
symbolic meaning of this sport is unmistakable. In Spain, it has
been preserved up to the present day in the form of bullfights.
The image of a bull is not unfavorable, as long as the dreamer sees
it as an indication that corresponding psychic energy should be
tamed. |
Burglars
We frequently find dreams in which burglaries
occur or burglars appear. With this image, the dream is expressing
the invasion of the dreamer's imaginative sphere by unconscious
elements. What is being referred to here is something which
has been overlooked or suppressed in everyday life. |
Burial
A statistical evaluation of well over a
thousand dreams showed that dreams of burials, dying and the dead
are the most frequent of all. The dream symbolism corresponds
to the real-life experience that it is often necessary for
unfulfillable wishes or matters of conflict to be 'buried' once
and for all. Of course, the image of a burial can also indicate
painful experiences. The decisive factor is the further development
in the dream. For the psyche, death represents a process of
change. Frequently something new replaces that which has been
symbolically buried. |
Butterfly
The butterfly appears in a dream as a symbol
for a mind which is going astray. the modern analogy of
a woman's butterfly mind, her flightiness and inconstancy, is very
pertinent here. Woman cannot find peace of mind unless she
has experienced sexuality's spiritual significance in the union
of man and woman. |
